چکیده

Abstract Electric space propulsion thrusters only produce low thrust forces. For the fulfillment of a mission this implies long thruster runtimes, and entails qualification times on ground. such testing times, ground facility requires vacuum chamber powerful pumping system which can guarantee high over extended under gas load. DLR’s STG-ET is test facility. It has capability for noble gases typically used as propellants. One basic diagnostic tool measurement device, among various other systems required electric testing, e.g. beam diagnostics. At DLR we operate balance developed by company AST with range 250 mN capable weights up to 40 kg. Adversely, it bulky heavy device all upgrades work needs be done in large chamber. In order have smaller at hand second stand development DLR. The idea light compact that could also placed one chambers. Furthermore, calibration more robust whole equipped watercooled housing. First tests are promising showed resolution well below 1 mN. paper give background information about chamber, describe basics new balance.

Thrust stand for vertically oriented electric propulsion performance evaluation.

A variation of a hanging pendulum thrust stand capable of measuring the performance of an electric thruster operating in the vertical orientation is presented. The vertical orientation of the thruster dictates that the thruster must be horizontally offset from the pendulum pivot arm, necessitating the use of a counterweight system to provide a neutrally stable system. Motion of the pendulum arm...

Nanobalance: an automated interferometric balance for micro-thrust measurement.

The paper is concerned with a new instrument, nanobalance, measuring thrust and noise of space micro-thrusters in the range 0-1 mN with submicronewton accuracy. Low-noise micro-thrusters will be essential for upcoming "drag-free" space missions like GOCE, SMART-2, LISA, and Darwin. Nanobalance departs from traditional thrust measuring concepts so as to exploit sensitivity of in-vacuum Fabry-Pér...

FEEP micro-thrust balance characterization and testing

A micro-thrust stand developed by the National Physical Laboratory under ESA funding was calibrated and characterized. The balance is based on the nulled-pendulum principle. The thruster is positioned in a constrained pendulum that is free to move only along the line of thrust. A capacitive displacement sensor measures the movement of the pendulum and is connected via a servo closed loop to a f...

Thrust Control Of An Electric Propulsion Space Vehicle With Minimal Fuel Consumption

The objective of this research is to develop a heuristic process to obtain a near optimal control strategy for an electric-propulsion spacecraft. The work reported here in particular uses a genetic algorithm (GA) to develop a control profile for an ionic thruster for a spacecraft such as the Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter (JIMO), although the methodology could be used for any deep-space mission usin...

Low Thrust Cis-lunar Transfers Using a 40 Kw-class Solar Electric Propulsion Spacecraft

This paper captures trajectory analysis of a representative low thrust, high power Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) vehicle to move a mass around cislunar space in the range of 20 to 40 kW power to the Electric Propulsion (EP) system. These cislunar transfers depart from a selected Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO) and target other cislunar orbits. The NRHO cannot be characterized in the classi...
